Destination

I’m happy to have discovered this place because now I know exactly where to go when I want to be here!

The Colombian Pacific coast is a unique place on the planet, ranking second in the world for biodiversity. Its extensive coastal area, filled with abundant solitude, harbors in its incredible beauty a pristine land where even time has been captivated and has surrendered itself in this lost paradise.

In this territory, the Emberá Katío indigenous people coexist with descendants of African races who migrated over 400 years ago. The Emberá, with their humble, simple, and introverted spirit, largely embody the silence that this place whispers into our ears. The Black race, descendants of African slaves who escaped the savagery of the Spanish during the conquest, found in this area the germination of a new Africa, bringing with them the rhythm, unwavering joy, and immense strength that characterize them. The Black community coexists with the Emberá, and today, faithful to the harmony that this land professes, they continue living together in peace.

With the arrival of new cultures, it is essential to strengthen bonds of cooperation. Health, education, and the reinforcement of identity are key for these inhabitants to overcome challenges and prepare for the voracious modern world. Here, all the inhabitants of the world will come together united by a shared spirit of kindness and beauty, thus composing the most valuable treasure of these spaces: its people.

Gastronomy

Essence of the Colombian Pacific

Since the time of the conquest, new culinary traditions were also implemented. A great variety of Spanish and Arab products for food began to arrive, such as starch, almonds, brown sugar, oil, rice, capers, olives, saffron, garlic, basil, mint, anise, sesame, cloves, cinnamon, chickpeas, lentils, and honey.

Adding to the fusion of Spanish and indigenous cuisine was the contribution of the Black African ethnic group, who brought their own culinary proposals and improved regional cooking. We owe them the presence of fried ripe plantains, roasted bananas, green plantains in soups and stews, “aguapanela,” and “dulce de macho” on the dinner table, among other dishes.

The Chocó region is one of the richest in sea and river fish due to its abundant fluvial resources. The department’s coastlines, with Colombia’s most beautiful coves and bays, allow for a wealth of fish and seafood dishes that form the basis of the local diet. These are frequently accompanied by yam, cassava, boiled or fried plantains, and coastal cheese. Likewise, the breadfruit tree is often used in local kitchens; the flour extracted from its seeds is used to make egg-filled arepas, fritters, and jelly. Locals also hand-distill “biche” or sugarcane alcohol, which is said to have aphrodisiac and medicinal effects. It has been used for years to cure various diseases, ranging from controlling parasites to snake bites.

Among the dishes, the following are famous: “arroz atollado,” “arroz ‘arrecho’,” and “arroz con coco” (different types of rice dishes), “fiambre en tamal,” “piangua” (a type of clam), “churuleja,” fried fish, “jurel” (jackfish) stew, fish empanadas, various ceviches, and wild boar stew. For dessert, there’s rice pudding with coconut milk, “masitas” (small pastries), and coconut “panelitas” (fudge-like candies) with or without passion fruit.

Sustainability

Let's always ensure our actions leave a green footprint on our journey!

ARCHITECTURE Our buildings are designed to minimize our environmental impact in every way. With high ceilings and open layouts, we create a naturally cool atmosphere without needing fans or air conditioning, all while providing shelter from the rain and wind.

RENEWABLE ENERGY Our refrigerators, electrical systems, and all lighting are powered by solar energy, which results in zero emissions and zero noise pollution. Because we rely on these renewable sources, we must minimize our energy demands. Therefore, we do not allow the use of high-power electrical appliances like hair dryers. However, you’re welcome to charge your mobile phones, cameras, and laptops.

WASTEWATER TREATMENT We have several septic tanks with filtration systems to treat our wastewater, which helps reduce odors and contamination. For this reason, we kindly ask our guests not to flush toilet paper or sanitary products. Please use the provided waste bins instead.

RECYCLING Regarding waste, we meticulously sort all the materials we generate, separating plastic, cans, glass, paper, cardboard, and organic waste. We compost the organic waste along with paper and cardboard. We use the glass to build coral reefs on the rocks just off our beach, and all other waste is taken back to Nuquí for proper disposal.
